Just Last Week
Artist’s Statement
For this documentary project I’ve interviewed women on the topic of male expectations of female behavior. Almost every time I asked about something recent or significant that has happened the response was “oh yeah, just last week…” and I realized how much of a constant it is in our day to day lives.
When I conceptualized this project I initially wanted to photograph women in their environments capturing multiple dimensions of them, to show that we’re not one-dimensional. However, once I began shooting I quickly realized that this was actually counterproductive of my goal. While we're certainly not one-dimensional, we’re definitely not just two... or three. We're everything. All the dimensions.
Each shoot that I showed up to the women were ready. They were strong and excited and shy and confident and funny. They were so many things in such a short amount of time. This is us, women. We are lovely inside. And we adapt and change to our environments. And these portraits are us in our elements: at home, in the studio, at school, at work, where we unwind; they’re where we are developing ourselves and learning to be the best versions of ourselves.
Full body of work, including an article I’ve written, available June 8, 2019 in the summer (and first!) issue of Dream Broad Magazine.
